HBO host Bill Maher doesn’t believe the hand of God saved former President Donald Trump from being shot dead by an assassin last week, and thinks those who are doing it are close to making him a “half god”.
In the closing monologue of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host mocked Trump supporters who have claimed that former President Trump’s assassination was prevented by an act of God, telling them to open their eyes and stop with ” magical thinking”.
“Enough is interpreting each event as a DM [direct message] from heaven,” Maher said, chiding Trump’s religious supporters during the segment.
Maher condemned the attempted assassination at the start of his show, just as he had done in the immediate aftermath of the traumatic event.
He told his HBO audience on Friday: “You have to be as angry about this as if the candidate you like was shot.”
He also attacked the US Secret Service for appearing to drop the ball in preventing the incident, saying: “You should also be outraged that the Secret Service allowed a kid with a sniper rifle and a rangefinder to get past the metal detectors. What? The TSA once treated me to a bottle of Visine.”
Later in the show, however, Maher criticized the way some religious Trump fans have characterized his assassination attempt.
The segment, titled, “In God We Lust,” began with the host saying, “Since the bullet that was meant for Donald Trump missed him last Saturday, Republicans have indulged in an orgy of magical thinking, saying things such as, “Trump wears the armor of God.”
Here are the latest on the assassination of Donald Trump:
He shared quotes from various conservatives and pro-Trump influencers who claimed that God was protecting the former President, including one from Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., himself an assassination victim in 2017.
Maher read Scalise’s tweet about Trump’s firing, which read: “Yesterday, there were miracles. And I think God’s hand was there, too.”
The host then joked about how God handled Scalise’s shooting compared to how he handled Trump’s: “Steve got shot too, but God was having a day off. And that bullet missed his ear and entered his spleen.”
Warning his supporters not to attach religious importance to Trump, he continued, “America does not need a demigod. From the pharaohs to Julius Caesar to Hirohito, many cultures have experienced it—the earthly being that is at once divine or occidental. And it never turns out well.”
