Former New Jersey Republican Gov. and longtime Trump critic Chris Christie faced backlash from “The View” co-hosts after declaring he wouldn’t even vote for former President Donald Trump nor for President Joe Biden.
In the wake of Trump’s selection of JD Vance as his running mate and his RNC acceptance speech Thursday night, Christie argued Friday that the former Republican president had failed “his chance to be a unifier,” arguing that he could have chosen someone as Governor of Virginia. Glenn Youngkin as his vice president.
“I know you’re not voting for Trump, are you going to vote for a Democratic ticket?” the show’s co-host Ana Navarro asked immediately afterward.
“At the moment, I’m not voting for either. I’m just not. I can not. A guy is completely mentally incapable of doing the job – Christie replied as the co-hosts erupted.
“But you have to vote!” co-host Joy Behar argued.
“No, I will vote against the ticket. I don’t have to vote [for president], no!” Christie said, standing as a co-host was heard telling her: “Yeah, yeah.”
“You can’t cast your vote! I asked you last time you were, Chris, and you’re going to sit this down?” said co-host Sunny Hostin, speaking on it.
Navarro grilled Christie, arguing it was ironic that he was telling Democrats to ditch their current presidential candidate when he planned to vote for neither.
The former governor said he will hold the position as long as Biden remains the Democratic nominee, but may change his mind if a better front-runner is offered.
“I am willing to consider anyone who presents himself as someone who will make the country better. Now, I am not encouraged by Kamala Harris’ performance so far,” he said.
When asked by Hostin why he wasn’t a Harris fan, he said, “Why not?” We only have one thirty minutes. I don’t have enough time.”
Hostin has been one of Harris’ staunchest defenders over the years, arguing that she has been criticized because of her black racial background or being a woman, and claiming that her widely parodied salads are actually a a product of her legal background rather than a blunder. .
After Christie declared that the Biden-Harris ticket would not win in November, Behar asked if he would be willing to vote for a Harris-Josh Shapiro ticket, featuring the more moderate Pennsylvania governor as his running mate.
“I do not know. Let me see what they have to say,” he said.
When many hosts objected to this answer, he stated, “I’m sorry I care what people stand for. I apologize. I will not pre-commit to it! Let them perform and get my vote! The people must have their vote earned!”
When Behar argued that the next time they saw him, he would probably vote for Biden, Christie joked, “I’m voting for you, Joy. I will write to you!”
